This CPD will discuss what must be taken into account when designing both high and low-rise buildings. It will cover the current fire safety legislation and guidance and look at the current routes to compliance and how these could be improved. It will also cover the key issues when constructing or replacing cladding systems on high rise buildings.
By the end of this CPD you will:
understand the different routes to compliance in high rise buildings under current building regulations; and
be able to identify possible ways of fixing a currently flawed regulatory system.
The tragic fire at Grenfell Tower on 14 June 2017 focused the nation’s attention on many aspects relating to the construction of high-rise domestic buildings and, more importantly, the safety of the people living in these buildings. Although the fire occurred in England, Scottish ministers wanted to ensure that occupants of high-rise flats in Scotland were safe and a Ministerial Working Group was quickly convened to oversee a review of the building and fire safety regulatory frameworks covering these types of buildings.
This presentation will give an overview of the approach taken by Scottish Government, but will focus on the review of Scottish building standards.
Focusing on timber frame construction, we will explore standard practices, defect identification and the inspection regimes required for any project. We will also discuss the requirements of the technical guidance and the impact that has on the Scottish Standards.
